A few private details..

I was born in Luton, England (gateway to the south!), but grew up and went to school in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.
I took my B.Sc. in Geology at Liverpool University, in 1988 and went on to take a M.Sc. in Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics at Imperial College, London in 1989. After learning German in 1989/90 in Marburg and Gießen, Germany, I began researching for my Ph.D. (or more correctly Dr. rer. nat - Doktor of Natural Science) at the University of Gießen in the summer of 1990, which I received with magna cum laude in December 1995. In April 1995, I started a post-doctorate project at the University of Gießen, and moved to the University of Freiburg in February 1996. In 1998-1999 I completed a post-doc at the Geochemical Institute at the University of Göttingen. I am now back in Freiburg, working on a post-doc project to retro-deform the Northern Calcareous Alps.

At present I live with my wife, Babette and our daughter, Emma Joan (born 07.06.98 in Kassel), in the sleepy town of Altenbrunslar, on the River Eder, just south of Kassel, Hessen.

My interests outside of geology include woodworking, long-distance walking, badminton and road cycling. At the moment I am rebuilding a old oak-framework house.
