The remaining three columns of the Temple of Serapis (2nd century B.C.)
show the gradual changes in the level of the land:
Evidence for immediate subsidence is given by a new floor 45 cm above the
original mosaic floor. After sedimentation of 3 m of volcanic ash and
continuing subsidence marine sediments follow on top of the ash layer.
Boring clams (their shells can still be found in the holes of the
columns) mark the range of the sea level in 3-6 m height above the
temple floor.
