Pending the award of a research grant, Geologisches Institut, Universität Freiburg, Germany plans to fill the position of

Research Associate in Marine Tectonics

(PhD opportunity)

The successful applicant is expected to hold a Science Diploma or M.Sc. in Geology at the time of appointment. Work undertaken in the framework of the research project outlined below should result in the completion of a doctoral thesis within three years.

The project is planned to include participation in Leg 180 of the OceanDrilling Program (ODP), targeted to drill several deep offshore holes in the Woodlark Basin, off Papua New Guinea. The expedition is scheduled mid-1998. The Woodlark Basin is an actively extending back-arc basin floored by thinned continental crust. The objective of the drilling is to understand the dynamics of basin formation, and to intercept an active low-angle crustal detachment zone. Project tasks are to study the mesoscopic and microscopic deformation structures in drillcore, and to identify deformation mechanisms and rheology of the faulted and sheared rocks of the Woodlark Basin.

Salary will be 50% of BAT IIa on the German public service payscale. Depending on age and qualification, this relates to a net monthly income of DM 1500 to DM 2000.
