Pending the award of a research grant, Geologisches Institut, Universität Freiburg, Germany plans to fill the position of a

Research Associate in Tectonophysics

(PhD opportunity)

The successful applicant is expected to hold a Science Diploma or M.Sc. in Geology or Geophysics at the time of appointment. Work undertaken in the framework of the research project outlined below should result in the completion of a doctoral thesis within three years.

The project includes the construction and deformation of a scaled model of the Higher Himalaya Lithosphere using rock analogue materials. The aim is to investigate the mechanical and thermal effects of vertical ductile extrusion of rock masses in a mountain belt relating to continental collision. The deformation rig is currently under construction and will be operational by December 1997.

Salary will be 50% of BAT IIa on the German public service payscale. Depending on age and qualification, this relates to a net monthly income of DM 1500 to DM 2000.
